Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are Georgia's: O.C.G.A. 48-5-48 for the qualifying disabled veteran and 48-5-52.1 for the unremarried surviving spouse of a service member killed in a war or armed conflict - the State entries carry the statutes, the qualification list and the yearly indexed amount. What Union's offices add is the route. Where and who. Tax Commissioner Lee Knight: the Tax Commissioner's site's About Us reads "Lee Knight was raised in Union County and attended Union County High School and North Georgia College and State University. Lee worked for 25 years as a marketing representative in the automotive business. ... Lee took office on January 2, 2013." The office: "The mission of the Tax Commissioner's Office is to bill, collect, and disburse all taxes as prescribed by the laws of the State of Georgia and to act as the Motor Vehicle tag and title agent for the State." Phone (706) 439-6017, fax (706) 439-6019, [email protected]. The Tax Assessor's office - Chief Appraiser Susie Phillips, 65 Courthouse Street, Suite 4, (706) 439-6011, fax 706-439-6012, weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with five real-property appraisers, one personal-property appraiser and one clerk, assisted by the contracted valuation vendor Georgia Mass Appraisal Solutions and Services (GMASS). The deadline and the office's own words. The Tax Commissioner's FAQ: "To apply for homestead exemption bring a copy of your warranty deed to the Tax Assessor's office between January 2 and April 1. To qualify you must both own and occupy your home as of January 1. ... Beginning June 1, 2005 application for homestead exemption may be submitted any time during the year but must be received before April 1 of the taxable year to qualify for the exemption that year." And: "Contact the Union County Tax Assessor's Office for details of the available exemptions." The county site's Tax Assessor page carries a property-tax-return notice - "Property tax returns for real estate must be filed with the Union County Tax Assessor at 65 Courthouse Street, Blairsville, GA between January 1 and April 1 of each year where property has changed or been acquired" - and no exemption text. A veteran files with the Tax Assessor's office and reads the amounts on the State entries. The Tax Commissioner's site is a script-rendered Catalis app that answers nothing to plain fetch; its pages were read in a browser session on 2026-11-03.
