Storey County Recorder: Recording Military Discharge Papers

The Storey County Recorder records standard documents at $37 under NRS 247.305, and its fee schedule lists no military-discharge line, so free recording rests on NRS 419.020.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, recorder, discharge papers, NRS 419.020, NRS 247.305, Virginia City, fee schedule.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

NRS 419.020 requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor"; see the Nevada entry. The Storey County Recorder's Office, in the County Courthouse at 26 S. B Street, Virginia City, records documents and files maps and keeps the cross-reference indexes to them; its pages describe the office's recordation and public-records work. The fee schedule the Recorder posts (read 2026-10-26) prices "NRS 247.305 ALL STANDARD DOCUMENTS ... $37.00" and carries the real property transfer tax and its own lines; it lists no line for a military discharge, so the office neither charges one nor prints the statutory free rule. A veteran asked to pay for recording an honorable discharge should cite NRS 419.020. What the pages do not say is whether a recorded discharge appears in the public index; recorded documents in Nevada are generally open to public inspection, so a veteran weighing whether to record a DD-214 should ask the Recorder first. Recording a discharge is always optional.
