Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's - Real Property Tax Law 458 (eligible funds), 458-a (alternative) and 458-b (Cold War) - each at local option, so the county, each town, the City of Ogdensburg and each school district set their own limits; the New York entries carry the rules. The county's Real Property Department trains and assists the local assessors but publishes no table of the limits; ask your town or city assessor, or the department. Veterans Services helps with the application. The full exemption. Real Property Tax Law 458-a(11), from Senate Bill S1183 (chapter 672 of 2025), lets each taxing jurisdiction fully exempt the home of a veteran VA rates permanently and totally disabled. At the Finance Committee on December 22, 2025, a legislator reported that the Legislature had passed the bill, then awaiting the Governor, and that "Local municipalities need to opt in once the bill is signed." The Board's local laws from then to October 19, 2026 (the senior and disability exemption amendments of late 2025, the tax cap override and the 2026 salary and other laws) include none for it, so for county taxes the full exemption is not available yet; a town, the city or a school district may act on its own. How to file. With the town or city assessor by the March 1 taxable status date. Real Property Department, Canton; Director Emily Wilson; (315) 379-2272.
