Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Sonoma County Civil Service Rule 4.4 (revised July 1, 2010) gives five points to a person who served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard in time of war, in any expedition of the armed forces, or on continuous active duty for more than 180 days, and was discharged or released under honorable conditions, or who is a disabled veteran. The person must compete in an open recruitment, file documentary evidence before the final filing date (unless Human Resources already has it on file), and reach the passing score. How the points work. Under Rule 6.4 the five points are added to the combined score, and under Rule 7.2 a candidate whose veterans' points bring the score level with or above anyone certified by examination score is certified too, so the points can carry a veteran onto the list the hiring department sees. Examinations limited to county employees give no veterans' points, and there is no larger credit for a disability. The rules do not define a disabled veteran or name a rating; bring the VA letter. "Under honorable conditions" includes a general discharge.
