Municipality of Skagway: Ambulance Fees Waived for Disabled Veterans

Skagway waives every ambulance subscription-related fee for disabled veterans who live in Skagway - the annual subscription, the base rate, transportation fees and medevac escort fees - if they register each year with proof of residency (Resolution 25-05R, effective January 1, 2025).

Also called: ambulance, EMS, subscription, medevac, Resolution 25-05R, fee waiver, Skagway Fire Department, Skagway.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Municipality of Skagway runs a ground ambulance subscription program: anyone may subscribe for $10 a person or $25 a family a year, which waives the base rate of a call (Basic Life Support $600, Advanced Life Support $800 and up) but not transportation, supplies or medevac escort charges. For disabled veterans, more is waived. Resolution No. 25-05R, adopted by the Assembly on February 20, 2025 and effective retroactively to January 1, 2025, amends the program so that "the Municipality will waive all ambulance subscription-related fees for Senior Citizens for local residents of Skagway aged 65 years and older, disabled veterans, and widows or widowers, including the annual subscription fee, base rate, transportation fees, and medivac escort fees." Eligible participants must register every year and show proof of residency; the waiver does not cover non-residents or visitors. Disabled veterans were added at the hearing: the Assembly replaced a seniors-only draft with an amendment after a resident asked that veterans qualify too, using, as the sponsor put it, the same words as the property tax exemption, "disabled veterans and widows or widowers"; it passed 6 to 0. The resolution does not define a disabled veteran; the property tax exemption it borrows from means one rated 50 percent or more, so bring the VA rating letter when registering. Where to register. City Hall processes the subscription (payments by phone at (907) 983-2297); the Skagway Fire Department, 308 17th Avenue, (907) 983-2450, runs the service.
