Seward County Veteran of the Month

Most months Seward County’s Veterans Service Officer introduces a Veteran of the Month at a Board of Commissioners meeting, often nominated by a VFW post, and the minutes record the veteran’s service: nine veterans were honoured between September 2025 and August 2026, from a Vietnam Marine to a Guard soldier with three Afghanistan deployments.

Also called: Veteran of the Month, recognition, nomination, VFW, American Legion, Ray Foreman, Seward, Milford, Utica, Beaver Crossing, Garland, Goehner, Bee, Cordova, Staplehurst.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The practice. "Veteran of the Month" is a standing item on the Board of Commissioners' agenda, usually at 9:15 or 9:45 a.m., when Veterans Service Officer Ray Foreman introduces the veteran and the minutes summarize his or her service. Several were "nominated by the Seward VFW" or its post; the county posts no form or rules, so ask the Veterans Service Office, (402) 643-4105, how to put a veteran forward. Who was honoured. Larry Heyen, a retired Navy commander and commander of the Milford American Legion (September 30, 2025); Paul Spieker, an Army medic (October 28, 2025); Alex Kufeldt, who entered the Navy in 1969 (November 25, 2025); Garry Dittmar, drafted into the Army after high school in 1965 and commander of the Utica American Legion post (January 27, 2026); Paul Rexroad, who served with the Marine Corps in Vietnam from December 1966 to January 1968 (March 3, 2026); Larry Bechtel, who enlisted in the Army in 1962 (April 28, 2026); Lucas Brown, Army National Guard and Iraq, now a major in the Air National Guard (May 26, 2026); Crystal Kirby, Army 2002 to 2005 with more than one tour in Iraq (June 30, 2026); and Gerald Meyer, 32 years in the Army National Guard with three deployments to Afghanistan (August 25, 2026). The minutes of October 27, 2026 record "no Veteran of the Month for October 2026".
