Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The office. The Scotts Bluff County Veterans Service Office is on the lower level of the Administration Building, 1825 10th Street, Gering, NE 69341, phone (308) 436-6643. From October 23, 2026 it is open Monday to Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., closed weekends and holidays. The Veterans Service Officer is Matthew Meyers, with secretary Sue Muehlbauer and admin assistant Lisa Ouderkirk, per the State's directory (updated October 26, 2026); the Board re-appointed him at its January 5, 2026 reorganization, with Commissioner Mike Blue as its liaison to the office. The office "assists veterans and their dependents in obtaining information about any V.A. benefits they may be interested in and also assists them in working up the applications and obtaining the needed supporting documentation", including applications for VA medical centre eligibility. Getting to VA care. "Disabled American Veterans vans provide transportation for veterans to both the Hot Springs, SD VA Medical Center and the Cheyenne, WY VA Medical Center on Thursdays. The Scotts Bluff County Veterans Service Office sets up the DAV Van volunteer drivers and the contact point for veterans who need rides." The Hot Springs medical centre's outpatient clinic in Scottsbluff, 701 E. Overland, is open five days a week 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 308-225-5330, for veterans enrolled at Hot Springs. Three counties. The State's directory lists Mr. Meyers as the service officer for Banner County too, at the Gering office, and for Kimball County at the Kimball courthouse (114 E. 3rd St., (308) 235-3141); the Board approved an Interlocal Cooperation Agreement between Scotts Bluff County and Kimball County, presented by Mr. Meyers, on August 3, 2026. Kimball County's own filed 2025-2026 budget lists the agreement among the two counties, their veterans service committees and Mr. Meyers, from July 1, 2024 and extendable, permitting him "to also serve as the County Veterans Service Officer for Kimball County", and pays Scotts Bluff County for it from Kimball County's own Veterans Service budget: $6,432.18 in 2023-2024, $12,345.56 in 2024-2025 and $14,172 budgeted for 2025-2026. Kimball County keeps its own office in its courthouse, with a full-time program coordinator, Darcee Wheeland, so it has an office entry of its own (see the Kimball County office entry). Banner County's side. Banner County's Veteran's Service Officer page names Matthew B. Meyers, and Banner County keeps no office of its own. Its filed 2025-2026 budget pays for him from its own Veterans' Service Officer budget (0100-803), booked as the official's salary: $2,000.00 in 2023-2024, nothing in 2024-2025 against $3,000.00 budgeted, and $3,000.00 for 2025-2026; its interlocal report lists Scottsbluff County agreements for 911, emergency management and jail services but none for the veterans service. Banner County's Board of Commissioners paid Scottsbluff County $2,000.00 for the "Veteran Service Officer" in its June 16, 2026 claims, and on November 18, 2025 adopted the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum of understanding for the county (see the Banner County aid entry; Banner County keeps no aid fund). The Board's year. It approved the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum of understanding for 2026-2028 (November 17, 2025) and appointed Fred Cawiezel to the Veterans Service Committee (June 15, 2026). The county's adopted 2025-2026 budget carries $227,315 for Veterans Service and $5,500 in the Veterans Aid fund (fund 1900), $4,123.50 of it from property tax; county aid under section 80-102 is applied for through this office (see the Nebraska entry). Memorials. On the west side of the Administration Building in Gering stand a memorial to all veterans who served on active duty, erected in 1989 with flagpoles for the American, State and POW flags, and an Afghanistan-Iraq Memorial, erected in 2009, honouring active duty service members who lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq - six names from an eleven-county area of western Nebraska.
