The office. The Saunders County Veterans Service Office is at 426 N. Broadway, Wahoo, NE 68066 (the county's Broadway Building), phone 402-443-8137, fax 402-443-5702. The county's page gives hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, "Open through the lunch hour"; the State's directory (updated October 26, 2026) gives 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. closed 12 to 1, so a veteran coming at noon should call first. The Veterans Service Officer is William (Bill) Bonney, re-appointed by Resolution #4-2026 on January 6, 2026. The office "assists veterans and their dependents in obtaining information about any V.A. benefits that they may be interested in and also assist them in working up the applications and obtaining the needed supporting documents", including applications for treatment at a VA medical centre.
The vehicle exemption. On January 27, 2026 Mr. Bonney briefed the Board on the State's new motor vehicle tax exemption for veterans with a service-connected disability of 0 to 100 percent - one vehicle, which he put as "1 vehicle per veteran per household" - and said about 800 Saunders County veterans are eligible; the Treasurer's Office identifies veterans when they come to license a vehicle "and send them down to the Veterans Services Office to get the paperwork filled out." The exemption, its one-vehicle limit and its filing window are the State's (see the Nebraska entry).
The Board's year. The Board raised the officer's salary to $60,000 on July 22, 2025 and approved the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum of understanding for the claims software on October 28, 2025; a Board member reported on July 28, 2026 that he had attended "the monthly Veteran's Presentation". The county marked the Saunders County Veterans Memorial's tenth anniversary at the courthouse, 433 N. Chestnut Street, Wahoo, on September 26, 2026. The adopted 2026-2027 budget gives Veterans Service $70,100.00 (against $64,970.57 spent in 2025-2026), including $1,500 for grave markers and flags and $500 for the VetraSpec contract.
Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries).
