Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

San Luis Obispo County Code section 2.40.150 (last amended in 2005) adds a credit to the score of an eligible person who passes a competitive examination for original appointment in the classified service. 5% of the maximum rating, for any of: An honorably discharged or separated veteran who served during a period of war or armed insurrection as VA's regulations define it. The spouse of such a veteran who, because of total disability, cannot follow any remunerative occupation. The unremarried widow of such a veteran. 10% of the maximum rating, for a wartime veteran as above who has an acceptable Veterans' Preference Certificate on file with the County Veterans Services Office and is currently rated by VA as 10% or more disabled from service. A VA record of the disability is conclusive. How to claim. File the Application for Veterans' Preference, with the DD-214 and any other documents, at the Veterans Services Office, 801 Grand Avenue; the office warns not to assume it already has them. A disabled veteran needs a VA letter dated within the last year with each job application. Where the office's page differs from the code. It asks a spouse for evidence that the veteran is "permanent and total" disabled; the code asks only that total disability prevent the veteran from working, which individual unemployability shows. It also offers the preference to a widower, where the code's words are "unremarried widow"; a widower should claim it. The code's wartime test leaves out a veteran who served only in peacetime, whatever the rating.
