Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

San Joaquin County Ordinance Code section 2-5010 credits a veteran's preference to honorably discharged veterans, and the unmarried widows and widowers of veterans, who served in one of these periods: April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918; September 16, 1940 to December 31, 1946; June 27, 1950 to January 31, 1955; August 5, 1964 to May 7, 1975; the Persian Gulf War from August 2, 1990 to a date to be fixed by proclamation or law; or any expedition for which a medal was authorized. How much. Five percent of the total rating received on the examination, added only to passing ratings on entrance examinations. A disabled veteran with a current rating of 10% or more gets ten percent instead, but the ten percent does not apply to entrance examinations for the Sheriff's Department, where a disabled veteran gets five. Which service counts. No proclamation or law has yet ended the Persian Gulf War period, so any service from August 2, 1990 counts. Service between May 8, 1975 and August 1, 1990 counts only with an expeditionary or campaign medal. The section asks for an honorable discharge, so a general discharge under honorable conditions should be raised with Human Resources before the deadline.
