For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exclusion is the State's, under G.S. 105-277.1C; see the North Carolina entry, which gives the $45,000 of assessed value it removes from tax. Rutherford County's Property Tax Relief page: "Exclusion for honorably discharged veterans whose disability is service connected and has been certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs as 100% permanently and totally disabling or the surviving spouse of an honorably discharged disabled veteran who has never remarried. There is no age or income requirement. One-time application is required." How and when. The page carries the Disabled Veteran Exclusion brochure and the Certification for Disabled Veterans, form NCDVA-9: "APPLICATIONS MAY BE TIMELY FILED UP TO AND THROUGH JUNE 1." The same page offers the elderly or disabled exclusion (2026 income limit $38,800) and the circuit breaker deferment ($58,200), which a veteran who misses the 100% test may still meet. Where the page is narrower than the law. "100% permanently and totally disabling" reads as a 100% schedular rating; the statute asks for a total and permanent service-connected disability, which a total rating through unemployability can meet, and it also reaches a veteran who received a specially adapted housing grant under 38 U.S.C. 2101. See the North Carolina entry.
