Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Placer County Code section 3.08.785, last amended August 5, 2025, adds five points to the passing score of a veteran or the unmarried widow or widower of a veteran, and ten points, not above the maximum possible, to that of a disabled veteran or the spouse of a disabled veteran rated 80% or more. It applies on initial entrance into county service, or on a later appointment after the first job's class is abolished and the employee laid off. Under section 3.08.780(B), a veteran whose points lift a passing score into the top five ranks becomes eligible for certification to the hiring department. Who counts. A veteran served at least 30 consecutive days of active duty beginning or ending in wartime, or in a campaign or expedition with a congressionally authorized medal, or in peacetime for a full enlistment or at least 24 months unless disabled, and was separated under other than dishonorable conditions. Service only in the reserves or only for training does not count, and a career member who retired after 20 or more years of active service is excluded. A disabled veteran was honorably separated and is currently rated by VA as disabled to a compensable degree, which in practice means 10% or more. The section also names veterans discharged from a VA hospital as fit for employment or who completed rehabilitative vocational training. Where the jobs page is narrower. Human Resources' Veterans Preference Points page gives five points to a veteran who is "not disabled, but separated within the last five (5) years", or within eight years while attending college full time. Section 3.08.785 has no time limit after separation. A non-disabled veteran who left the service more than five years ago should claim the points and cite the section. All documents (the long-form DD-214 and, as needed, the VA letter, marriage and death certificates) must arrive by the final filing date.
