Pennsylvania Veteran Designation on a Driver License

A free veteran designation on a Pennsylvania licence or ID for anyone discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, added online or by mail and carried forward at every renewal. A license held by a service member on active duty outside Pennsylvania stays valid until 45 days after they return or separate.

Also called: driver license, veteran designation, PennDOT, photo ID, license extension, CDL skills test waiver.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

75 Pa.C.S. 1510(a.1): a qualified applicant "has served in the United States Armed Forces, including a reserve component or the National Guard, and ... was discharged or released from such service under conditions other than dishonorable", so a general or other than honorable discharge qualifies. "There shall be no fee for the veteran designation", though the ordinary renewal or duplicate fee applies, and PennDOT validates the DD-214 or equivalent itself without sending it to the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Falsely claiming to be a veteran is unsworn falsification. How. Add it online through PennDOT's driver licence login (licence number, date of birth and the last four digits of the Social Security number) for a non-commercial licence, or by mail on form DL-80 to the Bureau of Driver Licensing. PennDOT (read 2026-10-24): "Once the Veterans Designation has been added to your license or ID, it will automatically appear each time your license or ID is renewed." Away on duty. PennDOT: the licence of "a service person on active duty in the United States Armed Forces will continue to be valid as long as active service continues outside the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and for an additional 45 days after returning to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or following separation from the Armed Forces." Commercial licences. PennDOT may waive the CDL knowledge and/or skills test for Pennsylvania residents "who are active or reserve duty military or recent honorably discharged veterans", with at least two years' experience operating a commercial motor vehicle as part of their military job, for vehicles like those they drove in service (49 CFR 383.77; form DL-398). For a veteran leaving service with truck or heavy equipment experience, that waiver removes the most expensive and time-consuming step in getting licensed to do the same work as a civilian. There is no disability rating anywhere in this entry.
