For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission issues lifetime hunting and fishing licenses to resident disabled veterans. The structure is what makes this valuable: a single nominal payment replaces an annual license fee for the rest of the veteran's life. The test is a rating of fifty percent or more as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and North Carolina residency. Certification from VA has to be submitted with the application. The Commission offers the lifetime license across its license tiers, so a veteran chooses the scope they want: inland fishing, coastal fishing, combination hunting and inland fishing, the Sportsman license which bundles hunting and fishing privileges, or Sportsman together with coastal fishing. The narrow licenses cost a few dollars once; the Sportsman tiers cost roughly a hundred dollars once. The Commission sets the current figures by rule and they have moved, so confirm the price for the tier you want before applying rather than relying on a figure in any guide. One condition is easy to miss. The license remains valid for the lifetime of the individual so long as the individual remains fifty percent or more disabled. It is lifetime in duration but conditional on the rating holding. A veteran whose rating is later reduced below 50 percent loses it. Apply through Go Outdoors NC online, or by mail to the Wildlife Resources Commission in Raleigh, with the VA certification. The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs publishes the application and county veterans service officers will certify it. Two separate provisions need no rating at all. A resident service member home on leave for 30 days or less may hunt and fish without a license while carrying military identification and leave paperwork. And an honorably discharged veteran is exempt from the licensing requirement on the Mountain Heritage Trout Waters, carrying a DD-214 as proof.
