Maine Veterans' Emergency Financial Assistance Program
Emergency grants of up to $2,000 for a Maine veteran facing home damage, illness, homelessness or a dental emergency, with dental capped at $500. It is a grant rather than a loan.
The Maine Veterans' Emergency Financial Assistance Program makes emergency grants of up to $2,000 to Maine resident veterans. It is a grant and there is nothing to repay.
The categories it covers are deliberately practical: damage to a home, illness, preventing homelessness, a dental emergency, and circumstances putting food, shelter or safety at risk. Dental emergencies carry their own sub-limit of up to $500 within the overall $2,000.
Eligibility is a discharge that is honorable or general under honorable conditions, and Maine residency. No disability rating is required and no wartime service is required, so a rating filter never hides this entry.
Administration is contracted out. Applications go through Fedcap's Veterans Forward programme rather than directly to the Bureau of Veterans' Services, which is the single most common reason an application goes to the wrong place. The bureau's page carries the current application link and the Veterans Forward contact details.
Two pieces of practical advice apply to any programme of this shape. Apply before the crisis completes rather than after, because a grant that prevents an eviction is easier to justify than one that reverses it. And ask the bureau's Veterans' Services Officer network for help with the application: those officers are free, they are spread across the state in field and itinerant offices, and they handle federal claims and state programmes together.
For a veteran whose need is ongoing rather than a single emergency, this is not the right programme. It is sized for a one-time gap. Ask the Veterans' Services Officer about federal VA pension, about the homeless veterans coordinator the bureau runs, and about MaineHousing's programmes before relying on repeat emergency grants.
Separately, the Maine National Guard Foundation Fund makes loans and grants for emergencies and special needs to Maine National Guard and United States Armed Forces Reserve members and their families. That is a different fund with a different gate and is the right door for a serving member.
