Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Hawaii's civil service law gives veterans preference points; the Hawaii entry on civil service preference describes the State's recruitments. The County of Maui's Department of Personnel Services publishes its own rules for county recruitments. Five points go to honourably separated veterans who served on active duty from December 7, 1941 to July 1, 1955; for more than 180 consecutive days any part of which fell after January 31, 1955 and before October 15, 1976; in the Gulf War from August 2, 1990 to January 2, 1992; or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign medal has been authorised, including El Salvador, Grenada, Haiti, Lebanon, Panama, Somalia, Southwest Asia, Bosnia and the Global War on Terrorism. Ten points go to a veteran who served at any time and has a present service-connected disability, or receives compensation, disability retirement or a pension from the military or VA (a Purple Heart counts as disabled); to an unmarried spouse of certain deceased veterans; to the spouse of a veteran unable to work because of a service-connected disability; and to the mother of a veteran who died in service or is permanently and totally disabled. What to send. "Applicants claiming 5 points must submit a copy of their DD-214. Applicants claiming 10 points must submit an official statement from the Veterans Administration or armed service dated within the past 6 months which confirms their qualification to receive 10 points preference." Spouses and widows add proof of marriage and, where it applies, the veteran's death. Apply at governmentjobs.com/careers/Maui and answer Agency-Wide Question 4, "Will you be claiming veteran's preference?" Only "certain recruitments" allow the points.
