Madera County Recorder: Military Discharge (DD-214) Recording

The Madera County Recorder records military discharge papers as a document type of its office (hours 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, 559-675-7724, and the Veterans Service Office will help record a DD-214), and prices no discharge recording on its fee pages, so the free recording rests on the State's no-fee rule.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Recorder's own page, read 2026-10-21, lists "Military discharge papers" among the records "which are typically recorded" by the office, beside deeds, financing documents, maps, mining-claim records, homestead declarations and liens; recording hours are "8:00 AM - 4:00 PM," the Recorder's telephone is 559-675-7724, and recorded documents are indexed by the names of the principal parties and open for public inspection, with copies sold at the office. The Recording and Vital Records Fees page prices a first page at $14 and $3 a page after, with the Building Homes and Jobs Act fee of $75 up to $225 unless a named exemption applies; it carries no line for a discharge recording, and the office's FAQ, Recording Requirements and Legislative Changes pages state no veteran practice of their own. Under Government Code sections 6107 and 27381 no county officer may charge to record or certify a discharge, so the free recording rests on the State entries; the Veterans Service Office advertises "Recording your DD-214" among its free services, and the Assessor's exemption FAQ makes the DD-214 part of the claim.
