Levy County Property Appraiser: Veteran Exemptions

Levy County's Property Appraiser lists the $5,000 exemption for a veteran disabled 10% or more, the total exemption for an honorably discharged veteran with a service-connected total and permanent disability, and the 65-plus combat-related discount, filed January 1 to March 1; its pages add a Florida-residence-at-enlistment test to the discount that section 196.082 does not set, and do not list the wheelchair veteran or deployment exemptions.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's; the Florida entries explain them. The Levy County Property Appraiser, Jason Whistler, publishes them on its exemptions page. What it lists. "$5000 Disabled Veteran: Any ex-service member who is a permanent resident of Florida and is disabled at least 10% in war or by service-connected misfortune is entitled to a $5000 exemption", proved with a certificate from the United States Government, and able to carry over to a surviving spouse. "Service-connected total and permanent disability exemption: Any honorably discharged veteran with a service connected total and permanent disability, surviving spouses of qualifying veterans and spouses of Florida resident veterans who died from service-connected causes while on active duty" are exempt on the homestead, proved with a certificate from the United States Government or the VA. And the "Disabled Veterans Homestead Property Tax Discount" for a veteran 65 or older with an honorable discharge and a permanent, combat-related, service-connected disability, equal to the VA percentage. Where the pages are narrower than the law. The discount, the page says, also needs a veteran who "was a Florida resident at the time of entering military service"; section 196.082 asks for age 65, a combat-related disability and an honorable discharge, not residence at entry, so a veteran who entered service from another state should apply. The page names section 196.091 only as the source of a VA certificate inside the exemption for wheelchair users and the legally blind under section 196.101, which carries an income limit that counts VA benefits; it does not list the wheelchair veteran exemption itself, which needs a total service-connected disability and VA specially adapted housing assistance and has no income limit. The FAQ's list of exemptions omits the combat-related discount, and neither page mentions the section 196.173 exemption for deployed service members; the forms page carries neither the DR-501DV nor the DR-501M. Ask for those by section number. When and where. "Generally, initial application for property tax exemption must be made between January 1 and March 1"; the exemptions page says initial applications can be made in person, and the FAQ describes an online homestead application through the parcel search with the documents uploaded. The home page gives the office's new address, 355 Garner Street, Bronson, FL 32621 (P.O. Box 100), 352-486-5222, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays; its contact page still prints 310 School Street, Room 108. Exemption questions go to [email protected].
