Knox County Government's Veterans Services Office is the county veteran service office under 58-3-109. Heidi Paumen is the veterans service officer and Dean Keck the deputy.
What it does. The office helps veterans and their dependents file for service-connected disability compensation, the improved pension with housebound and aid and attendance, VA health care enrollment, burial benefits, flags, headstones, markers and military honors, the GI Bill, vocational rehabilitation, Dependents' Educational Assistance and VA insurance, and orders replacement discharge papers, military records and service medical records. It also visits the county's senior centers for one-on-one benefit help.
What to bring. The office's checklist asks for the DD-214 or equivalent, Social Security numbers and birth dates for the family, every marriage and divorce record, the veteran's death certificate for a survivor claim, medical evidence or a disability benefits questionnaire, direct deposit details, and for a pension claim the household's income, assets and medical expenses. It says to call even without all of it.

The Commission accepted a $2,000,000 federal community project grant for veterans housing on June 22, 2026 (R-26-6-501). The county has not yet published how it will be used.
