Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Florida counties pay for the final disposition of unclaimed dead under section 406.50. On December 17, 2025 Jackson County's Board unanimously adopted a revised Unclaimed Remains Policy, replacing the 2020 one, that pays the funeral home which takes the body to the medical examiner a flat $1,100 for transport, cremation and storage of the cremains for up to 120 days. The veteran exception. Cremation is "The standard method of disposition for unclaimed remains, unless the deceased qualifies for burial in a national cemetery as a veteran or eligible dependent." The policy pays for transporting a body out of the county in that case: "When the deceased qualifies for burial in a national cemetery. Veterans are entitled to burial in a national cemetery in accordance with 38CFR. The person or entity in control of the body should make reasonable effort to have a Veteran honorably buried by contacting the County Veterans Department, the National Cemetery Scheduling Office, or the regional office to the Department of Veterans Affairs." The policy covers people who die in Jackson County with no verified living relatives, or whose relatives cannot or will not take responsibility. For families. A family that cannot pay for a veteran's funeral can ask Veteran Services, (850) 718-0003, about VA burial benefits and national cemetery eligibility; the nearest national cemetery is Tallahassee National Cemetery.
