Iron County (Utah) Auditor: Veteran, Active Duty and Killed in Action Exemptions
The Iron County Auditor, 68 South 100 East, Parowan (435-477-8338), takes the State's veteran exemption by disability percentage (10% or more, filed once), the active duty exemption after 200 days of service outside Utah (filed each time, with orders) and the full exemption for the surviving spouse or minor child of a veteran killed in the line of duty, all due September 1; the forms it posts still cite the section numbers Utah replaced in 2025.
Also called: property tax, veteran exemption, abatement, 59-2a-501, 59-2a-502, 59-2a-601, 59-2-1903, 59-2-1904, 59-2-1902, PT-025, PT-022, active duty exemption, killed in action, September 1, Auditor, McKayla Meinhardt, Board of Equalization, Cedar City, Enoch, Parowan, Brian Head, Kanarraville, Paragonah, Newcastle, Beryl, Lund, Summit.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.
The exemptions are the State's: the veteran with a disability exemption (Utah Code 59-2a-501 and 59-2a-502) and the active duty exemption (59-2a-601 and 59-2a-602); see the Utah entries for the amounts (the disability percentage times $535,459 of taxable value for 2026, nothing below 10%, unemployability counted as 100%) and the rules.
What the Auditor's page says. Under "For Individuals who are Blind, Disabled, Low Income, or Veterans": "Disabled Veteran / Spouse Eligibility: At least 10% service incurred disability; Unmarried surviving spouse or minor child of a disabled veteran; Claimants name on title of primary residence", with a DD-214 and the VA disability award letter, application "Required Once". "Active Duty Veteran Eligibility: At least 200 days in a continuous 365 day period outside the state beginning in prior year", with a copy of the deployment orders, application required yearly. "Widow or Widower of KIA Veteran Eligibility: Unmarried surviving spouse or minor child of a veteran killed in the line of duty", with the casualty letter from VA, one time. Everything must reach the Auditor's Office by 5 p.m. on September 1; "There are no refunds available for previous year's taxes", and a denial may be appealed to the State Tax Commission within 30 days.
What the cover letter adds. The Deputy Auditor's letter with the disabled veteran form: once approved, the veteran's name goes to the Division of Motor Vehicles so the abatement can be used toward vehicle registration, and "the age-based fee is waived"; the amount used on vehicles comes off the total, and in October what remains is applied to the home. Tell the office if the rating changes, or on moving or buying a new home.
The forms are older than the law. The posted disabled veteran form is the Tax Commission's PT-025, revision 01/23, headed "UCA §59-2-1903 and 1904", and the active duty form is PT-022, revision 1/20, citing sections 59-2-1901 and 59-2-1902; the 2025 general session moved both exemptions to chapter 59-2a, so the current sections are 59-2a-501 and 59-2a-502 and 59-2a-601 and 59-2a-602. The benefit is the same. A 100% permanent and total veteran may also apply before buying, under 59-2a-502(5), which the page does not mention; ask the Auditor.
