Howard County Government Disabled Veteran Hiring Preference

A preference on county eligibility lists for a veteran with a compensable VA rating of 30% or more, ranked above the preference for other applicants with disabilities. A veteran without that rating gets no preference.

Also called: county job, hiring preference, veterans preference, classified service, 30%.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

County Code section 1.122A, from Council Bill 40 of 2012, has the Personnel Officer set a preference for the first appointment of a qualified individual with a disability to a classified position. The code counts a veteran rated by VA with a compensable service-connected disability of 30% or more as such an individual, and requires the policies to give that veteran a higher preference than the others. The preference applies only when an eligibility list is being set up. The code gives nothing to a veteran rated below 30% or with no rating; Howard County has no general veterans preference and has not adopted the 10-point selection credit that Local Government Article section 1-204 allows. Claim the preference in the county's online job application.
