Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The rules are the State's, and the Kentucky entry on discharge recording sets them out: KRS 422.090 has the county clerk record a resident's discharge without charge, keeps the recorded papers out of public disclosure (the index of names stays public), lists who may get a copy, and lets the veteran have the clerk destroy every copy; it was last amended in 2010. The Hardin County Clerk's own recording page: "Recording a DD214 a.k.a. Military Discharge - As a veteran one of the single most important documents you'll ever have is your DD214... Bring it to us and let us record a copy of it here. You get your original back immediately. We keep it private. It does not become part of the public record. Any certified copy of it we give you is as legally binding as the original. We keep it forever... please call our office at 270-765-2171 option 3".
