The table. The county's Veteran Exemptions page, under the Tax Assessors' Homestead Exemptions menu of habershamga.com, is a table with columns "County M & O Tax", "Hospital Bond", "School M & O Tax", "Emergency Medical Services" and "State Tax". The veteran rows: "S5 - 100% Disabled Veteran; Un-remarried Surviving Spouse of Disabled Veteran - $121,812" on every levy; "SD - Age 65: 100% Disabled Veteran; Un-remarried Surviving Spouse of Disabled Veteran - $121,812" on the county levies with the state column reading "100% on home & up to 10 contiguous acres of land AND $121,812 on balance of value"; "SS - Un-remarried Surviving Spouse of US Service Member killed in action - $121,812"; "SE - Age 65: Un-remarried Surviving Spouse of US Service Member killed in action - $121,812" with the same 100-percent-plus-balance state rule. (The table's SG row - "Un-remarried Surviving Spouse of Firefighter killed in the line of duty - 100%" - is the firefighter statute, not the veteran one.) The $121,812 is the O.C.G.A. 48-5-48 amount as indexed; the State entries carry the statute and the qualification list beside it. The route. The Tax Commissioner's own site, habershamtax.com, carries the filing rule: "To receive the benefit of the homestead exemption, the taxpayer must file an initial application. The application is filed with the Habersham County Tax Assessor's Office. First time homeowners need to bring a copy of their warranty deed to insure their application is filed correctly. ... Georgia law allows for the year-round filing of homestead applications but the application must be received by April 1 of the year for which the exemption is first claimed by the taxpayer." The same page's own state-exemption summary carries the older $50,000 base amount - the assessor's table above is the current one, and the Tax Commissioner's office is at 130 Jacobs Way, Suite 202, Clarkesville (706-839-0120). A veteran files with the Tax Assessor's Office and reads the amounts on the table and the State entries.
