Garfield County (Nebraska) Veterans Aid

Garfield County’s page describes a county veterans aid fund for emergencies but still asks for wartime service and an honorable discharge, tests the 2024 amendment removed; its filed 2025-2026 budget carries no veterans aid fund at all, so ask the Board and any county veterans service officer about county help and the State’s aid fund.

Also called: county veterans aid, CVA, 80-102, emergency aid, wartime era, Veteran’s Service Fund, Burwell.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

Where it applies

What the page says. Garfield County's County Benefits page calls the CVA fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, applied for through the County Service Office, where the veteran "must demonstrate an 'inability'" to pay. The test it prints is out of date. The page limits the fund to veterans who "received an Honorable Discharge, and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'". LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime-service test from section 80-102, which now reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. Where the money is. The filed 2025-2026 budget's index names a Veterans' Aid Fund (1900) but the budget gives it no pages, and its budget summary lists no veterans aid fund among the county's funds; the only veterans line is the office's (see the Garfield County office entry). On September 9, 2025 the Board approved Resolution 2025-15, "Veteran's Service Fund", whose text its minutes do not give. With the office vacant since June 30, 2026, ask the County Clerk, (308) 346-4161, what county help the Board will consider, and any county veterans service officer about the State's Nebraska Veterans' Aid fund. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion.
