L5 is the same exemption with the age 65 school tax exemption; Forsyth's L1 rule exempts a homeowner 65 or older on January 1 from school general and school bond taxes. "This exemption extends to the unremarried surviving spouse or minor children at the time of the applicant's death, provided they continue to occupy the home as a residence and homestead."
Surviving spouses of those killed in service. This exemption gives $126,526 deduction in all tax portions (State, County, Municipal, and School)."
How. "Applicants must provide a copy of their Driver's License or state-issued ID that matches the property address, award letter and DD214 at time of application." Only the regular and age 65 homesteads can be filed online or by mail; "All other homesteads and other specialized exemptions must be filed in person at the Forsyth County Board of Assessors Office (426 Canton Hwy)", weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline is April 1 or the 45-day appeal window, as Senate Bill 566 (2026) allows. The floating homestead (L7), which freezes the county operations and fire value, comes with every homestead.
