Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Alaska has no county courts: the trial courts belong to the Alaska Court System. The Fairbanks Veterans Court is the second of the two Veterans Courts on the Court System's therapeutic courts list, and its published handout, PUB-124 (10/22), is the program's own description. What it is. A specialized court designed to facilitate the rehabilitation of eligible veterans charged with criminal offenses, providing judicial monitoring coupled with alternative-sentencing plea agreements so veterans succeed with their own rehabilitation and return to a productive, law-abiding lifestyle. Who is eligible. The veteran must be eligible for VA services as defined by federal law and confirmed by the VA; have a felony, misdemeanor, pretrial-release matter, or be out of custody or on felony probation, and have been referred to the Veterans Court; have a treatment need, related to the criminal conduct charged, that the VA can address through one of its treatment programs; be 18 years old or older; and maintain housing within the Fairbanks North Star Borough for the duration of participation. The handout also describes the offense-date limits for application and the court team drawn from the Court System, the VA and the defense bar.
