Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, AS 29.45.030(e), which Alaska requires every taxing municipality to grant; the State entry records the statute. The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assessing Department administers it under FNSB Code 8.04.010 and 8.04.060, as its fact sheet prints, and its rules are these. Amount and proof. Up to $150,000 of assessed value may be exempt from taxation. Applicants must have a service-connected disability rating of 50 percent or more, documented by a current letter from the VA submitted with the application. Deadline. Timely filed applications are accepted through February 11. If the exemption application was filed on time but the final disability rating letter had not arrived, the applicant may request an extension in writing with the application: the Assessor may extend the deadline to February 14 of the following year, and taxes paid are reimbursed once the required documentation is submitted. In person. Applications must be completed in person at the Assessor's Office, 907 Terminal Street, Fairbanks, AK 99701; (907) 459-1428; [email protected]; office hours 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Annual letters and review. If there are no changes in ownership, property description, residency, permanent place of abode or disability status there is no need to reapply each year, but a veteran whose rating has not been determined permanent by the VA must submit a current disability rating letter annually by February 14. The Assessor may require proof at any time and periodically reviews and audits exemptions. Widow or widower. The widow or widower of a disabled veteran qualifies if the veteran had a rating of 50 percent or more, the veteran either qualified or would have qualified had they applied, and the widow or widower is at least 60 years old by January 1 of the assessment year and not remarried. Required documents: marriage certificate, death certificate, proof of residency and the veteran's disability rating information. Trusts and notification. Properties in trust require the first page, the ownership page, the page identifying the property in trust and the signature/date witness page, and the application signed as trustee. Applicants must notify the Assessor of any change in ownership, residency, property use, permanent place of abode or disability status.
