Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The rules are the State's; the Florida entry on discharge recording explains them. The DeSoto County Clerk's Recording Fees and Information page lists "DD214 - Military Discharges" among the only documents it can record, and says "The fee for recording a document is $10.00 for the first page and $8.50 for each additional page of the same document"; its Filing Fees page has the same lines, with $1.00 a page for copies and $2.00 to certify, and no discharge carve-out. Section 28.222(3)(d) makes recording the part of a discharge that shows its character free to the veteran, the Board of County Commissioners paying the Clerk's charge, so a veteran recording a DD-214 should cite it rather than pay. Keeping it off the internet. The Clerk's notice of August 18, 2026 tells any person of the right to have "an image or copy of a public record, including an official record, if that image or copy is of a military discharge" removed from its public website under section 28.2221; "Requests must be notarized, state the statutory basis for removal, and confirm the individual's eligibility for exemption", by email to [email protected] or [email protected], or by mail or in person to the Clerk of Court, Attn: Recording, 115 East Oak Street, Arcadia, FL 34266. Taking it out of the record. The Clerk's pages do not mention section 295.186, which lets a veteran, widow or widower, attorney, personal representative, executor or court-appointed guardian ask in person, with identification, for a recorded DD-214 to be removed from the Official Records altogether, free; the removal is permanent, so keep a certified copy first.
