Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The District adopted the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children in 2013, at D.C. Code 49-1101.01 and following. Who is covered. Under D.C. Code 49-1101.04, children of active duty members of the uniformed services, which includes Guard and reserve members on active duty orders; children of members or veterans who were severely injured and medically discharged or retired, for one year afterwards; and children of members who died on active duty or of injuries sustained on it, for one year after death. Children of inactive Guard and reserve members, of retirees and of veterans generally are not covered. What schools must do. Accept a special power of attorney for enrolment and consent; not charge local tuition to a student placed with a non-custodial parent or guardian in another jurisdiction, and let the student stay in their school; include transferring students in extracurricular activities regardless of deadlines; and, for graduation, waive courses completed elsewhere or explain why not, accept the sending state's exit exams or national tests, and if a senior still cannot graduate, arrange a diploma from the sending school. A deployment, for the compact, runs from a month before departure to six months after return. A charter school preference. D.C. Code 38-1802.06(c-2), added in 2016, lets the Public Charter School Board approve one public charter school at a time that gives an admission preference to children of active duty members of the armed forces, for no more than half its seats, if the school is in the same ward as a military base. Contact. The District's compact council is at the Office of the State Superintendent of Education; the Army benefits library lists its phone numbers.
