Metro Nashville's Civil Service Rules guarantee an interview to every honorably discharged veteran on an open competitive register, down to the person selected. There are no points. Send the DD-214 showing the service and the type of discharge.

Metro Nashville fills its classified jobs under Civil Service Rules adopted by the Civil Service Commission; the edition read here took effect July 1, 2025.
The preference. Rule 2.8: "Veterans with an honorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States will be identified on Open Competitive Registers and guaranteed an interview down to the person selected. A copy of the DD214 form must be submitted verifying the period of service and type of discharge." In practice a veteran who makes the register is interviewed for the job, however the register is ranked, so long as the hiring department interviews down to the person it chooses.
Its limits. It covers open competitive registers, not promotional ones. It asks for an honorable discharge, so a general discharge under honorable conditions does not meet its words. It gives no points and nothing extra for a service-connected disability. Departments outside the Civil Service Commission, such as Nashville Electric Service, the Metro Nashville Public Schools or the Board of Health, have their own rules. The state's employment preference in 8-30-307 covers state jobs; see the Tennessee entry on veterans preference in state employment.
Metro employees also get Veterans Day as a paid holiday, and the July 2025 revision counts short-term military leave of up to 10 days per service requirement as time worked for overtime.
