Custer County Veteran’s Aid Fund

Custer County’s section 80-102 Veteran’s Aid fund had grown on interest to $105,422.58 by July 2025 without paying any aid in two years, and the whole sum is budgeted for 2025-2026; in April 2026 the Board paid $5,000 from it to a "Custer County Veterans Aid Fund" account, and the county’s page still prints the wartime test that LB1300 removed.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

What the page says. The county's page calls the CVA fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, applied for through the office, and limits it to veterans who "received an Honorable Discharge, and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'". LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime-service test from section 80-102, which now reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. What the fund holds. Fund 1900, County Veteran's Aid, levies no tax: it held $98,005.57 on July 1, 2023, earned $1,759.44 and $5,657.57 of interest in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025, paid nothing in either year, and held $105,422.58 on July 1, 2025, the whole of which the filed 2025-2026 budget sets for "Veteran's Aid Costs". The Board's claims of April 14, 2026 then paid $5,000.00 from the fund to "Custer County Veterans Aid Fund" for support, the only aid-fund claim in the year's minutes; the minutes do not say what that account pays. Apply through the Veterans Service Office, (308) 872-2071; see the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
