Collier County's Human Resources division publishes Florida's veterans preference in full: claim it on the application with form VP-1 or a letter, attach the documents for each section 295.07 category, and, if no hiring decision has come, contact the county between 45 and 90 days to preserve the right to complain to the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
Also called: veterans preference, county jobs, Human Resources, 295.07, 55A-7, VP-1, VP-2, VP-3, Talent Acquisition.
Florida's chapter 295 requires preference in public employment; see the Florida entry. Collier County's Human Resources division publishes how it applies the statute and rule 55A-7 of the Florida Administrative Code to Board of County Commissioners positions.
Claiming it. Request the preference on the job application and submit documents at the time of application: a Veterans' Preference Certification (FDVA form VP-1), or "a simple letter, form, or other written application containing essentially the same information". Documents can be scanned to [email protected], faxed to 239-252-6618, or dropped off or mailed to the Human Resources Division, 3303 East Tamiami Trail, Naples 34112. Every veteran submits a DD Form 214; disabled veterans add documentation from the DoD or VA of a service-connected disability, and "the type of disability does not need to be disclosed in most cases"; the listed spouses, widows and widowers, parents and guardians add the certificate, marriage proof or guardianship papers their category calls for; current reserve and Guard members add a signed memorandum from their military supervisor. The page warns that a veteran "MUST have been discharged with nothing less than an 'HONORABLE' discharge", which is the statute's own rule for veterans.
The contact rule. "All persons seeking Veterans' Preference shall attempt to contact Human Resources or other designated contact at least one time after 45 days have passed, but not longer than 90 days from the final date for submitting an application or the interview date, whichever is later", and document the attempt; if the employer does not respond, the applicant has 60 days from that attempt to complain to the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs, (727) 518-3202 extension 5511, [email protected].
