Clayton County Tax Commissioner: Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption
The Clayton County Tax Commissioner's exemption page sets the disabled veteran exemption at $121,812 for tax year 2025, requires a DD-214, and gives five eligibility routes headed by a VA letter adjudicating the veteran totally and permanently 100% disabled, with the homestead deadline of April 1 every year.
Also called: property tax, homestead, 48-5-48, $121,812, Tax Commissioner, April 1, DD-214, Jonesboro, Fort Gillem.
The exemption is the State's, under Code section 48-5-48; see the Georgia entry. In Clayton County the Tax Commissioner takes homestead applications; its exemptions page is the county's own statement of the veterans' amount.
What the page says. "Homestead Exemption Deadline is April 1st every year. All Homestead Exemptions submitted after the deadline will be valid for the following year." Under "Veterans Exemption - $121,812 (*For tax year 2025)", "Five ways to be eligible: Letter from VA stating the wartime veteran was: Discharged under honorable condition. Adjudicated as being totally and permanently 100% disabled. Receiving or entitled to receive benefits for a 100% service-connected disability." And, for the non-VA-adjudicated route, "Must have DD Form 214 military discharge record."
Where the county is behind or narrower than the law.
- The amount. $121,812 is the federal maximum for fiscal 2025; Code section 48-5-48 indexes the amount each year, so the 2026 figure is higher - the county's page has not caught up. The State entry carries the current figure.
- The deadline. The April 1 deadline is the old rule; Senate Bill 566 (2026) lets an applicant file with the Board of Assessors from January 1 until the end of the 45-day appeal period after assessment notices are mailed. The county's own board was still considering an opt-out and additional exemptions in 2025 (see the header note).
- The rating. Section 48-5-48(a)(1) also takes individual unemployability paid at the 100% rate and the statutory awards for loss of limbs or sight; the page names only the VA adjudication routes.
