Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are Georgia's: O.C.G.A. 48-5-48 for the qualifying disabled veteran and 48-5-52.1 for the unremarried surviving spouse of a service member killed in a war or armed conflict - the State entries carry the statutes, the qualification list and the yearly indexed amount. What Chattooga's offices add is the route and the county's own lines. Where and who. The Tax Commissioner's office: Courthouse Annex, 120 Cox Street, Summerville, GA 30747, P.O. Box 517, Summerville, GA 30747-0517, (706) 857-0703, [email protected]; "Monday - Friday 7:30am - 5:30pm * *Closed Wednesdays". The office's own site, chattoogacountytax.com, carries the tax search and the news list whose 2026 closures include "Nov 11 - Veteran's Day". The exemption text. The site's General Information page prints the county's rundown. The route: "To receive the benefit of the homestead exemption, the taxpayer must file an initial application. The application is filed with the Chattooga County Tax Assessor's Office... the Board of Assessors makes the final determination as to eligibility." The deadline: "Georgia law allows for the year-round filing of homestead applications but the application must be received by April 1 of the year for which the exemption is first claimed"; the site's announcement line is blunter - "Application Deadline for all State and Local Exemption is April 1." The State's veteran rows: "The Disabled Veterans Homestead Exemption is available to certain disabled veterans which is deducted from the 40% assessed value of the homestead property. This exemption applies to all ad valorem tax levies; however, it is restricted to certain types of very serious disabilities (that are service-connected disabilities) and proof of disability, either from the Veterans Administration or from a private physician in certain circumstances" - "A similar exemption in the same amount is now available to the un-remarried surviving spouse of a member of the armed forces of the United States who was killed in any war or armed conflict engaged in by the United States" - the county's own text names the route and no amount; the qualifying disabled veteran reads the amounts on the State entries. The local rows are age-70 lines: county - "Homeowners 70 and older (where the federal adjusted gross income for applicant and spouse does not exceed $20,000 for the preceding year) may receive an in increased homestead exemption... The amount of exemption is from 20% to 100% of the assessed value (40%) depending on the income level for the primary residence and up to 5 acres on which it is located"; school - "up to $40,000 of the assessed value of the homesteaded property." Property taxes are "due on December 1st". The assessors. The Board of Tax Assessors' own record-search site (qpublic.net/ga/chattooga) was not read (the gap goes to docs/COUNTY-REVISIT.md), and the assessor office's other site, taxchatt.com, now answers "This domain is for sale." The assessor's route stands on the county's own records: Chief Appraiser Nancy Edgeman ([email protected]), P 706.857.0737, F 706.857.0748, at 120 Cox Street, with the board of John Bailey (Chairman), Betty Brady, James Blair and Rick Wyatt; the county's August 31, 2026 "Understanding County Property Taxes" class - Edgeman presenting - records the office's own list of duties: "Receives and processes Exemptions (Homestead, Senior / Veterans, CUVA, and FLP)", hours "Monday - Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm".
