Chatham County Tax Administration: Disabled Veteran Exclusion and the Elderly or Disabled Exclusion
Chatham County's Tax Administration takes applications for the State's disabled veteran exclusion, the first $45,000 of a permanent residence's appraised value for an honourably discharged disabled veteran or an unremarried surviving spouse, with the NCDVA-9 filed before June 1; the same page carries the elderly or disabled exclusion, the greater of $25,000 or 50% of appraised value with a $38,800 income limit.
Also called: property tax, disabled veteran exclusion, 105-277.1C, 105-277.1, NCDVA-9, $45,000, elderly or disabled, $38,800, June 1, Pittsboro, Siler City, Goldston, Fearrington, Bynum.
The exclusions are the State's, under G.S. 105-277.1C and 105-277.1; see the North Carolina entries. Chatham County's Property Tax Relief page describes both. Disabled Veteran Exclusion, as the county cites it: "This program excludes the first $45,000 of the appraised value of a permanent residence owned and occupied by a Chatham County resident, who is either an honorably discharged disabled veteran or the surviving spouse of an honorably discharged disabled veteran who has not remarried. Form NCDVA-9 must be completed by the NC Division of Veterans Affairs. The completed NCDVA-9 form and application must be filed at the Tax Office."
Elderly or Disabled Exclusion: "This program excludes from property taxes, the greater of $25,000 or 50% of the appraised value of a permanent residence owned and occupied by a qualifying owner. To be eligible for this exclusion you must be a permanent resident of Chatham County, age 65 or older, with an income not exceeding $38,800 or a permanent resident of Chatham County, totally and permanently disabled, with an income not exceeding $38,800."
When. "Application for exclusions must be filed with the Tax Listing Office before June 1 of the year in which you meet the above qualifications (to be considered timely)." The page notes the disabled-veteran path also needs certification of total and permanent disability, and its income rules count every source including Social Security and retirement, excluding gifts or inheritances from a spouse or immediate family member. The county's page numbers the disabled-veteran statute "105-277.1C"; that is the section.
