Charlotte County Property Appraiser: Veteran Exemptions
The Charlotte County Property Appraiser takes exemption applications by March 1, including the $5,000 exemption for a veteran disabled 10% or more in wartime or by service-connected misfortune and the full exemption under section 196.081 for a total and permanent service-connected disability, with a discount for veterans 65 and older honorably discharged with a service-connected disability.
Also called: property appraiser, DR-501, March 1, 196.24, 196.081, 193.461, homestead, Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda.
The exemptions are the State's; the Florida entries explain them. The Charlotte County Property Appraiser administers them from ccappraiser.com.
Filing. The Appraiser's exemption page sets the deadline: "The deadline due date for this form and new applications is March 1", with applicants needing "title to the real property, and... bona fide Florida residents living in the dwelling and making it their permanent home as of January 1".
What the page describes for veterans.
- "Section 196.081, F.S., provides that real estate qualifying for the homestead exemption on January 1, owned by veterans honorably discharged with a service connected total and permanent disability, shall be exempt from ad valorem taxation."
- "Disabled Veterans' Property Tax Discount on Homestead Property - If you are age 65 and honorably discharged from military service with a permanent service connected disability, you may qualify for this additional discount."
- "...disabled at least 10% or more war-time disability from Veteran's Administration. This exemption can also pass on to the surviving spouse under certain conditions" - the section 196.24 $5,000 exemption.
The same page's senior exemption shows the form habit: "Applicants are required to complete a DR-501SC, 'Adjusted Gross Household Income Sworn Statement and Return'", so the veterans' forms (DR-501, DR-501DV, DR-501M) come through the same office.
Where the page is thinner than the law. It does not say the 65-plus discount equals the percentage of the disability that is combat-related, or name the wheelchair veteran exemption of section 196.091; ask for those by number.
