Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The office. The county's page puts the Cedar County Veterans Service Office at 101 S. Broadway, Hartington (PO Box 246, Hartington, NE 68739), phone 402-254-7473, fax 402-254-7173, open Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through the lunch hour. The State's directory (updated October 26, 2026) gives the courthouse, 103 S. Broadway, with admin assistant Marlene Wieseler, and shorter hours: Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to noon, so call before going. The Veterans Service Officer is Scott Stanton. The office helps veterans and dependents with information on VA benefits, with applications and supporting documents, and with eligibility for VA medical centre treatment. What the county lists. The County Benefits page (modified November 7, 2025) names county veterans aid (see that entry); a bronze grave flag holder reflecting the veteran's wartime era, inventoried each year and replaced when damaged; recording of a certified copy of the DD-214, after which the veteran "may call us from any where in the world" for a certified copy; homestead help, the office obtaining each year "a letter from the VA Regional Office" naming eligible veterans and widows for the Assessor; and grave registration, with a card sent to the State and a Presidential Memorial Certificate ordered for the family of every deceased county veteran. Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries). Rides. Cedar County Transit, the county's public transit (402-254-9147, weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to book; round-trip fares from $5 within Hartington to $80 for 400 miles, at most 200 miles each way), says "Receipts available for Veteran's rides that can be turned into VA for reimbursement." The money. The filed 2025-2026 budget gives the office (0100-803) $77,900.00, against $60,074.09 spent in 2024-2025, including $8,000.00 for grave markers and flags (nothing spent on them in 2024-2025, $5,650.75 in 2023-2024).
