Broward County Property Appraiser: Veteran Exemptions, the Combat Discount and the Deployment Exemption

The Broward County Property Appraiser offers the $5,000 exemption for ratings of 10% to 99% only, sets the combat discount at the combat-related share rather than the whole permanent rating, says both that a surviving spouse can and cannot keep that discount, and limits the deployment exemption to deployments "outside the United States".

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's; the Florida entries explain them. The Broward County Property Appraiser, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Room 111, Fort Lauderdale (954-357-6830), grants them, and most can be applied for online. Where the Appraiser's pages are wrong or narrower than the statutes. The $5,000 exemption. The page says the applicant must "Be a veteran with a service connected disability rating of 10% - 99%", and that the disability "must be military service-related". Section 196.24 reaches a disability of "10 percent or more", so a veteran rated 100% who is not permanent and total, or who wants the $5,000 on property other than an exempt homestead, still qualifies. The combat discount. The page says "an eligible veteran will receive a total exemption from property taxes equal to the percentage of combat-related disability". Section 196.082(2) sets the discount at "the percentage of the veteran's permanent, service-connected disability", the whole permanent rating, once some of it is combat related. The same page says Florida law extends the discount to surviving spouses from January 1, 2021, and then says "Florida law does not provide for a surviving spouse exemption in this category"; section 196.082(3) does carry it to a surviving spouse. It asks for the DD-214, the VA rating decision, evidence from VA or the service branch of the combat-related portion, proof of age 65 and form DR-501DV. The deployment exemption. The page requires deployment "Outside of the United States". Section 196.173 says outside the continental United States, Alaska or Hawaii, so a deployment to Puerto Rico or Guam in support of a named operation can qualify. Its list of operations is the one in force before 2026; see the Florida entry for the five added. It asks each year for form DR-501M with orders or a DD-214 showing the dates, place and operation. The Appraiser also grants the wheelchair veteran exemption under section 196.091 (exemption code 06); see the Florida entry.
