Bradford County Solid Waste Disposal Assessment: The County Pays It for Disabled Veterans
Under section 66-133 of the Bradford County Code the county pays the solid waste disposal assessment ($125 a year in 2026) on the homestead of a veteran or surviving spouse who has the section 196.081 total and permanent exemption, or who would qualify for it but owes no tax anyway. Apply in writing to the county manager before the fiscal year ends; the exemption then renews by a yearly certification.
Article III of chapter 66 of the Bradford County Code levies a special assessment for solid waste disposal on residential property; the county manager's April 7, 2026 budget workshop gave the current rate as $125 a year.
The exemption. Section 66-133, "Exemption for service connected total and permanent disability and/or death", says: "Any veteran who was honorably discharged with a service connected total and permanent disability and who has been granted an exemption from ad valorem taxation by the property appraiser pursuant to F.S. § 196.081 is eligible to receive payment of the solid waste disposal assessment by the county on his or her behalf", and extends it to everyone granted the section 196.081 exemption, which includes the surviving spouse who carries it. The county pays from other funds, not the assessment's. It also reaches a person who meets the section 196.081 criteria but has no exemption only because the $25,000 homestead exemption already leaves no tax, on the same proof section 196.081 asks for. One exemption per homestead.
How to claim it. Apply "in writing with the county manager, before the end of the fiscal year for which the exemption is sought", under oath; missing the fiscal year waives it for that year. Each year the county manager mails a "Solid Waste Disposal Assessment Veteran's Exemption Renewal Certification" to everyone exempt the year before; check the box, sign and return it to keep the exemption without reapplying, and tell the county manager if you stop qualifying. False information means repaying the county with 12% interest. The veterans service office lists help with the exemption among its services: 904-966-6385.
