Bernalillo County Jobs: Guaranteed Interview for Veterans and Guard Members

Bernalillo County guarantees an interview to every veteran, disabled veteran and National Guard member who meets a job's posted qualifications. New Mexico law gives no preference for county jobs, so this is the county's own rule. It needs an honorable or general discharge.

Also called: veterans preference, military preference, interview, county jobs, hiring, National Guard, Albuquerque, DD-214.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

New Mexico's veterans' preference statute covers only the State's classified service, not county or city jobs; see the New Mexico entry on state employment preference. Bernalillo County adds its own. What it gives. "Any member of the above groups who meet the posted job qualifications shall be granted interviews by hiring departments": U.S. veterans, disabled veterans and members of the National Guard. It is an interview, not points; the hiring decision is still on merit. Who qualifies. A veteran with "an honorable or general discharge"; a veteran discharged honorably with a service-connected disability; or a person currently serving in the National Guard. A general discharge, under honorable conditions, counts. Other than honorable does not. Where it comes from. The Board of County Commissioners adopted the veteran and spouse interview preference on December 13, 2016 (Action Memo 6181, attaching Administrative Resolution 2014-54) and took an update on interview results in August 2018. That memo's title includes spouses; the Human Resources page does not mention spouses, so a spouse should ask whether the 2016 preference still reaches them. Answer the preference question on the application and attach the DD-214.
