Arizona Veteran License Plates

Twenty-six military and veteran plate designs, most carrying an initial and an annual fee. The plate is separate from the vehicle license tax exemption, which is where the real money is.

Also called: license plate, MVD, ADOT, Freedom plates, disabled veteran plate, Purple Heart, specialty plate.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Arizona issues 26 military and veteran specialty license plates through the Motor Vehicle Division, marketed as Freedom Plates. A branch plate such as the Army Veteran plate carries an initial fee and an annual renewal fee in the region of $25 each, with part of the proceeds directed to the Arizona Veterans' Donation Fund. It is worth being clear about what this entry is and is not. The plates are largely a recognition benefit that a veteran pays for, not a discount. The financial benefit in Arizona sits in the vehicle license tax exemption, which is a separate application with its own eligibility and is covered in its own entry here. A veteran who qualifies for that exemption gets it whether or not they buy a specialty plate, and buying a specialty plate does not produce the exemption. Certain plates carry no fee or a reduced one depending on the category, and the qualifying documentation differs by design: a DD-214 for a branch plate, proof of the award for a Purple Heart or valor plate, and VA documentation for a disability plate. Order through the MVD, in person or online, with the Department of Veterans' Services verification where the design requires it. A veteran whose disability affects mobility should handle parking separately. Arizona issues disability plates and placards on a medical certification rather than on a VA rating, so a disabled veteran plate does not by itself confer disabled parking rights. Proceeds from the Freedom Plates go to the Arizona Veterans' Donation Fund, which supports state veteran programs including the Military Family Relief Fund. For a veteran choosing between designs, that is a reason to pick one of these over a generic specialty plate.

Proof of service, an award, or a VA rating depending on the designEach plate design has its own documentation requirement: a discharge document for a branch plate, proof of the award for a decoration plate, and VA documentation for a disability plate. The rating filter does not gate the plates generally.
