Arizona Vehicle License Tax and Registration Exemption

One vehicle exempt from the vehicle license tax and registration fee for a 100% disabled veteran, and for a vehicle VA helped buy. Deployed service members get a one-year exemption on up to two vehicles.

Also called: vehicle license tax, VLT, registration fee, ADOT, MVD, 100 percent, adapted vehicle, deployment.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Arizona charges a vehicle license tax as part of annual registration, calculated from the value of the vehicle, and it is the expensive part of registering a car in this state. Several veteran exemptions remove it. A veteran with a 100 percent service-connected disability is exempt from the vehicle license tax and the registration fee on one vehicle. Because the tax recurs annually and scales with vehicle value, this is worth materially more on a newer vehicle and it repeats every year. A vehicle acquired with VA financial assistance, which is the automobile allowance and adaptive equipment benefit, is exempt from the license tax and registration fee. That path keys to the federal benefit rather than to a rating percentage. A deployed service member receives a one-year exemption, and it covers up to two vehicles per deployment. A family that garages a second car while one spouse is deployed should claim both. A nonresident on active duty stationed in Arizona is exempt from the vehicle license tax portion, though not from the rest of the registration cost. Apply through the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division, with the VA benefit summary letter or the deployment orders as appropriate. The exemption is per vehicle and has to be claimed. It does not attach automatically to a veteran's record, and it does not follow the veteran to a replacement vehicle without a fresh application, which is where most people lose a year of it.
