Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Arkansas Code section 11-15-103 lets "a private employer or local government employer" have "a voluntary veterans' preference employment policy". It must be in writing and applied uniformly to hiring, promotion or retention in a reduction in force, and may be modelled on the state's own preference law. Who can benefit. Under section 11-15-102: a veteran who served more than 180 days of active duty and was released other than dishonorably, or was discharged for a service-connected disability, or was a reservist released from federal active duty other than training; the spouse of a veteran VA has rated permanently and totally disabled, if a U.S. citizen; and an unremarried surviving spouse who is a citizen. The applicant proves it with the veteran's DD 214. Local government. A municipality, county or township must first adopt a resolution. The state and public colleges are excluded, because they follow the mandatory law in section 21-3-302. It is voluntary. Nothing requires an employer to adopt one. Ask whether the employer has.
