Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Sheriff's Merit Commission. Adams County Code 4-4-18 sets who may be appointed deputy sheriff or correctional officer, and its paragraph (l) reads: "Any applicant have served a minimum of two years of active military service, having received an honorable discharge, as evidenced by a DD214, shall receive an additional (5) five points to his/her written test score." The State statute behind the commission, 55 ILCS 5/3-8010, lets commissions give preference to those "who have honorably served", and since January 1, 2025 a veteran discharged honorably or generally under honorable conditions no more than 6 months before applying "may request examination to occur before the next scheduled examination date" and, on passing, goes straight onto the eligibility list, without losing military preference points. The county's rule asks for an honorable discharge and two years; the early examination route asks only for the discharge. Pension credit. Code 1-6-8(c) (Ordinance 11-10-97): "Pursuant to 40 ILCS 5/7-139 the County Board elects to allow service credit to employees who served in the armed forces of the United States for up to two (2) years of service, prior to their participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund." Section 7-139 now allows up to 48 months of military service credit to a member who applies to the Fund in writing with proof of service, has the current employer's written approval, and pays the employee contributions, the employer's normal cost and interest; credit for leaving county work for active duty and coming back within 90 days is separate, and federal reemployment law adds its own. Where. Sheriff's Merit Commission, through the Sheriff's Office, 535 Vermont Street, Quincy, IL 62301 (217-277-2200). Ask the hiring office about IMRF military credit before buying it; IMRF prices the purchase.
