Adams County Jobs: Military Leave and Differential Pay
Adams County pays employees in the Guard, Reserve or armed forces full salary for four weeks of military leave a year, then tops up military pay to county salary for up to five years, and pays both shares of health premiums for the first twelve months of active duty. The Board rewrote the policy for July 2026.

On June 30, 2026 the Board of County Commissioners adopted a new Policy 3.5(3), Military Leave, in the Adams County Employee Manual, revised July 2026, to comply with House Bill 26-1413, which raised paid public employee military leave under C.R.S. 28-3-601 from three weeks to four from July 1, 2026; see the Colorado entry. It covers county employees other than part-time two (RP2), project, temporary and seasonal staff.
Full pay. Up to four weeks a calendar year (20 days or 160 hours, pro-rated for part-time) with all pay and benefits, used for the first four weeks of duty or training in the year. A deployment that runs from December into January can carry the new year's four weeks to its end or to later training.
Differential pay. After four weeks, if military pay is less than the employee's base county salary, the County pays the difference for the whole leave, up to a cumulative five years; the employee sends People and Culture a Leave and Earnings Statement each month. If military pay is higher, the leave is unpaid, and annual leave or compensatory time can be used.
Benefits. For active duty of more than 30 consecutive days, the County keeps paying its share of medical, dental and vision premiums and also pays the employee's share for up to twelve consecutive months. Long-term disability and life insurance continue for the first 90 days. Leave and holidays do not accrue while unpaid.
Coming back. The employee returns to the same or a like position without loss of seniority under USERRA, given advance notice, a timely return, no more than five years of cumulative leave, and no disqualifying or other than honorable discharge.
