Property tax exemption estimator

Every state sets its own veterans' property tax relief, and some counties and towns add to it. Pick the place, enter your rating and the value on your assessment notice, and this works out what comes off and lists every program there with what it still asks of you.

Sign in to save these inputs to your household, so everyone in it sees the same numbers. Saved scenarios are part of the Command plan.

Some programs have an income limit. Without an income they are listed but not counted.

Enter the value from your assessment notice. Each program below says which value it comes off.

Your tax rate in mills, or dollars per $1,000 of value, turns the result into dollars. A rate per $100 times ten is the same figure.

Enter the rating on your VA decision letter.

How this is worked

Each program is written from the statute as the catalog entry it links to records it, with the day that entry was read. A program that takes value off is applied to the value you enter, and one that comes off the bill is taken from the tax. Most states let a home carry only one veterans' exemption, so the estimate counts the one worth the most and adds only what the law says is taken on top of it.

A program is counted when your rating, age and the kind of property meet it. What the estimator cannot test, such as an income limit, wartime service, years of residence or a filing deadline, is listed under the program as a condition, and the estimate assumes you meet it.

What it leaves out

Exemptions that turn on how a home was acquired, general senior and disability programs, and local amounts no source publishes are not worked out. A county or town that is not listed is treated as giving nothing beyond its state. Rates change every year, and a figure indexed to inflation moves with it.

An estimate for reference, not a decision by an assessor. The assessor or appraisal district decides the exemption, and your tax bill is the record of it.
