Michigan / State / 2023-2024 Regular Session
2024 PA 149 (House Bill 5127) Extended the disabled veteran plate to 50 percent veterans and to surviving spouses
Amended MCL 257.803f, effective April 2, 2025, to let a partially disabled veteran with a VA service-connected disability rating of not less than 50 percent hold the DV plate, and to let the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran rated not less than 50 percent use and renew it after the veteran’s death. The registration tax exemption in section 801 was not extended with it and still reaches only a totally disabled veteran, so a 50 percent veteran gets the plate and the service fee waiver and still pays the registration tax. Tracked for a second reason the act did not mention: the Recreation Passport exemption in MCL 324.74116(c) cross-references section 803f as a whole, so partially disabled veterans gained free state park entry at the same moment, and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency recreation page still describes that benefit as being for 100 percent disabled veterans.
