York County Vehicle Registration Fee Exemptions for Disabled Veterans, Former Prisoners of War, and Nonresident Service Members

No York County $23 vehicle registration fee on one vehicle of any disabled veteran as defined for Disabled Veteran plates, on one vehicle of a former prisoner of war, or on vehicles of nonresident service members.

York County charges an annual registration fee of $23 on a private passenger car under section 15-22 of the County Code. The same section exempts one motor vehicle owned and used personally by any disabled veteran "as defined in section 46.2-739", which is the Disabled Veteran plate section and reaches any VA-certified service-connected disability; one passenger vehicle, pickup, or panel truck of a former prisoner of war who was honorably discharged; and vehicles owned and registered solely by members of the armed forces who are not Virginia domiciliaries. That is wider than the state mandate in section 46.2-755(B), which covers only a veteran who already has the DMV disabled veteran fee exemption and the plates.
