Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Mo. Rev. Stat. 59.480 makes the recording of a discharge free and limits who may see or copy it; see the Missouri entry. The Recorder's page lists among its responsibilities to "File and maintain military discharge documents (DD214)", and adds: "The Recorder of Deeds will file and maintain military discharge (DD214) documents. These documents are restricted from a public search and may only be accessed by the veteran or authorized party. A veteran or authorized party may requested a copy from our office at no charge, however a completed DD214 request form must be filed out, notarized and turned in to our office to request a copy." The form posted is the Recorders Association of Missouri's: one record per form, the veteran's identifiers, the requester's authority and a notary's signature. Formats and fees. The office's Document Formatting Standards list "Military separation papers" among the documents exempt from the State's formatting requirements, so an old or odd-sized discharge draws no non-standard fee; the fee schedule updated August 28, 2026 prices land records and liens and has no discharge line.
